The Mounties: Kelsey MacDougall
At the age of 16, biochemistry student and Women鈥檚 Hockey Mountie Kelsey MacDougall left home in Pennfield, NB to pursue her studies and women鈥檚 hockey at Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire. She had been playing boy鈥檚 hockey since the age of five and made the switch to girl鈥檚 hockey at 14. In her senior year, she had to make the decision to stop playing hockey or continue her career. She chose to move on and play at 果冻传煤.
鈥淚 come from a small town and went to a small town in New Hampshire to go to school,鈥 says MacDougall. 鈥淧laying for 果冻传煤 meant returning to a small town where I was comfortable and being able to be close to home.鈥
MacDougall remembers one of her top sporting moments as winning the league championships at Proctor in double overtime against a team that was the strong favourite to win.
A defenceman, MacDougall says she hopes to be that player on the ice that works really hard and pushes others to do the same.
鈥淚 really want to bring my best to the ice every shift of every game,鈥 she says.
She was recently awarded Athlete of the Week honours for two strong outings as the Mounties opened the 2016-2017 AUS regular season with a loss to UPEI and a win against Dalhousie. MacDougall had a goal and an assist, scoring the first goal of the game to give the Mounties the lead in a game they would eventually win 3-1 over the Dalhousie Tigers.
She believes that Mountie Pride is much more than who she is on the ice.
鈥淚t鈥檚 about who I am off the ice, plus putting on a jersey and playing not just for me, and not just our team, but for the entire University."
In her fourth year, MacDougall is involved in Mounties in Motion on campus, plays ball hockey in the summer, and enjoys the outdoors and hiking. She is looking at the possibility of studying power engineering after graduation.
